Truman
Connections
Please consider yourself
invited! As a graduate and/or friend of Truman, we need your wisdom,
energy and advice. You would be a great addition to our Truman
Connections Program.
What is the Truman
Connections Program?
Your chance to make a
difference! Truman alumni and friends--like you--volunteer to be a part
of a network providing career information and advice to current Truman
students.
What are the benefits of
Truman Connections?
- The chance to
make a difference in a student’s life by assisting with career and
life decisions. You will offer a “real world” view of your profession.
- The opportunity
to stay in touch with university life. Find out from a current
student what’s happening on campus.
- An opportunity
to connect with students interested in your field of work.
- The ability to
advance your field by encouraging the interest of bright, talented
students.
How do I participate?
First fill out the attached
form. The Career Center will then database your information. Interested
students will search the database and make contact with you. If you
have any questions about participation, please call the Career Center at
(660)785-4353.
What
if I am a very popular Truman Connections member?
Although we expect this new
program to be popular, a built-in protection allows only a specific
number of students to contact you during the school year.
Tips
for Success
- Students are
sometimes apprehensive about contacting a professional. Be prepared
to ask the student questions about his/her interests, classes, goals,
and activities.
- Share
information about yourself. Students are interested in knowing what
you enjoy—professional organizations, activities, hobbies and how you
balance work life with family and other interests.
- You may have a
college experience in common with many students. Don’t hesitate to
ask your student about college experiences.
- Offer students
the chance to interact with your colleagues as is appropriate. For
example, if you are a recruiter in HR and think that a student would
benefit from corresponding with the trainer in your department, try to
make this connection.
- Keep in touch
with your student. Send an occasional e-mail to ask how he or she is
doing and offer encouragement.
