References

  • References should be professional connections. (Professors, Advisers, Supervisors...)

  • Employers want to check 3 references; you should provide 4-5 in case at the time of calling some are unreachable.

  • References should be people you are confident will speak highly of your work style, projects and motivation.

  • When asking someone to be your reference, provide them an updated resume and a job description so they can speak to your qualifications.

  • Create a separate reference sheet with the same header as your resume.

  • Supply references when requested, but do not put "References available upon request" on your résumé.

  • Supply the name, title, employer, mailing address, phone number, email address and the reference's relationship to you.

  • List your references in the order you would like them to be called.
