Jan Fishback, Career Coordinator and Liaison

Every semester, the Career Center hosts the Career Expo, a gathering of recruiters from a variety of companies. The Spring 2007 Career Expo alone brought in over 100 recruiters to the University. But "companies just don't fly in; we have relations and that brings them in," explained Jan Fishback, Career Coordinator at the Career Center and the driving force behind employer recruitment.

For years, Jan Fishback has been developing relationships with a variety of employers. "First, I brainstorm," she stated. Jan carefully plans what companies she'll visit based off of interest expressed by students and by the job market. In other words, she focuses on employers who can give the best positions to Truman students. Many occasions it takes multiple phone calls for her to get an appointment with recruiters, but Jan doesn't give up easily. As anyone on the job hunt knows, persistence is an important attribute!

Jan spends roughly six weeks out of the year traveling to from company to company informing them of the benefits of hiring Truman students. She focuses on employers in larger cities, such as St. Louis, Kansas City, and Chicago. Jan explained that she's more than willing to travel to cities that are farther away, but the majority of students are interested in jobs closer to here.

Because Jan is in frequent contact with recruiters, she also can help students network. If a student needs connections with an employer, she probably has them. If she doesn't have connections, then she'll build them. Jan's determination to help students is one of the many reasons why she's such a valuable member of the staff at Truman State University.

Jan can't do it alone. It's important for Truman students to not only let Jan know what employers they're interested in, but also to let the employers know. Calling to inquire about positions helps to convince them that sending recruiters to the Career Expo will be beneficial to their company. With the students' initiative, Jan Fishback and the rest of the staff at the Career Center will be available to guide you toward a rewarding career.
